As surfers, we know that the number one danger isn’t sharks or walled out tsunami waves. It’s not even kooks dropping in or the rocks at low-tide. Instead, it’s the ever present, life-force granting ball in the sky: that’s right, it’s the sun. When you’re out there on the waves, you need to take sun protection seriously. That means shopping around, trying what’s best for you, and above all, doing your own research. Here at TKM Surf, we care about the ocean. One product that I’ve had a lot of success with is Zinc Sunscreen – in particular – Neutrogena Zinc SPF 50.

What is Zinc Sunscreen?

Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Dry-Touch Sunscreen Lotion with SPF 50 is a product that goes on thick and smears sticky. Doesn’t sound appealing? This isn’t your grandma’s sunscreen – this is a pasty white mix that actually works. It’s a mineral-based sunscreen that contains zinc oxide, which provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

I’ve personally used this sunscreen for over a year now, and can attest to how well it works.

But wait, why does it have ZINC?

Zinc oxide is a PHYSICAL sunscreen, which means it sits on top of the skin. This way, it can scatter the UV rays before they reach your precious skin. This is different from CHEMICAL sunscreens, which sink into your skin (and who really knows what that’s doing to you!). Remember to protect yourself and the ocean!

Zinc oxide offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays, which can cause sunburn, skin cancer, and premature aging. Zinc oxide is also considered safe and effective by the FDA, and it is suitable for sensitive skin types.

Some of the benefits of using zinc oxide sunscreen are:

So what’s the catch then? Why doesn’t everyone use Zinc Sunscreen?

  • The color – as with most sunscreens – leaves you looking a little pale
  • The thickness can be tougher to rub in (be gentle with your face, folks)
  • $$$ – it’s not cheap
